To apply for a visa, and to check
your visa status before travel, contact the Thai Embassy or Consulate in
your own country . A passport valid for at least three months from your
entry date is required for entry into the country. Once a visa is issued
at your country of origin it must be used within 90 days.

From 1st October 2006 tourists from 41
countries including Australia, the UK, Canada, France, Germany, Japan,
the US and all the Schengen countries may enter Thailand without visas
and stay for up to 30 days, but their entry stamps will only be
renewable twice at most for a
maximum stay of 90 days. Without a proper visa you can only stay in
Thailand for 90 days, then you will have to leave for 90 days before you
can return and get an entry stamp on arrival. So.....make sure to
arrange a proper visa!
Citizens of a further 76 nationalities,
including many African and Latin American nations, are eligible to
15-day Transit Visas. Transit Visas are issued on arrival and may only
be extended at the discretion of the Immigration Division. Certain other
nationalities may be required to obtain a visa in advance of travel.

The Tourist Visa is valid for 60 days. The
Tourist Visa may be extended by a further 30 days at the local
Immigration office, but only one extension is granted. You can renew
your Thai Tourist Visa in Malaysia, we recommend Penang. You can get a
new visa within 2 working days. You apply in the morning and pick up your
visa the following day in the afternoon. Many travel agencies arrange
visa runs to Penang. You can also fly directly to Penang and save the
long and boring bus trip!

The 90-day Non-Immigrant Visa must be obtained
in advance, outside of Thailand. Visits to friends and family, work or
extended business trips, study and retirement are all considered good
reasons for issuance of the visa. Visitors with Non-Immigrant Business
Visas are permitted unlimited entry in and out of the country, however
you must leave the country every 90 days unless you apply for a 1 year
Thai visa. Extension of Non-Immigrant Visas may be made at the
discretion of the Immigration Officer. Success depends on your reasons
for the extension, appearance and supporting documentation. Certain
categories of workers, executives and retirees may be able to extend the
visa for 1 year. If you have a 1 year visa you must report to
the immigration every 90 days, else you get a 2,000 THB fine!

Don't forget if you have a valid visa and
you want to visit another country for a few days then you need to
obtain a Re-Entry Permit at an Immigration Office or at the Immigration
Counter at Bangkok International Airport (Terminal 1). The cost is 1,900
THB and a passport-size photo is required. The process normally takes a
few minutes. If you forget this, then your visa will be invalid! If you
have a multiple entry visa, and you forget to obtain a Re-Entry permit,
then you will loose 1 entry!

If you're planning to stay in Thailand for any
length of time you should keep a ready supply of photos and copies
of your passport. These are always handy in case of loss of your
passport or for the red tape that you are sure to encounter at
immigration counters and other government offices.
